It was my fathers' game: first one in the family to remember the date and wish others a happy first of the month wins. No prize. Just the satisfaction of knowing what day it is and calling it to others' attention. I mentioned it in one of my two books about family and had a few responses; some people called the game "Firsters". I wonder if anyone still plays it. It's a form of celebration, a tribute to the ordinary, to time passing, to dailiness, consciousness and appreciation for small blessings. The acknowledgement of a new month, a new day is a way of saying "Hey, I'm still here!" I hope you are.
